Gold Guide 2026

In November 2025, 10 grams of gold cost about ₹1.25 lakh (IBJA rate, before GST). By January 2026 it had shot up to about ₹1.75 lakh. By July it had slipped back to about ₹1.42 lakh. So what makes gold go up and down in India, and is there a “right time” to buy? This guide answers in simple words, using figures from the RBI, the Union Budget, the GST Council, the tax department and IBJA, not guesses from price-prediction websites.

The Short Answer: When Do Gold Prices Go Up and Down in India?

Think of Indian gold as a world price wearing an Indian outfit. The world price is set in US dollars. India then adds its own layers: the rupee-dollar rate, import duty and GST.

So gold in India usually rises when the world price rises, when the rupee weakens, or when the government raises import duty. It usually falls when the world price falls, when the rupee gets stronger, or when duty is cut.

What no one can tell you reliably is which month this will happen. The sections below show why.

How Much Did Gold Actually Move Last Year?

IBJA (the India Bullion and Jewellers Association) publishes a daily gold rate that the trade uses as a reference. The table shows its rate for 999 (pure) gold per 10 grams, before GST. It is a benchmark, not the price on your jeweller’s bill.

DateIBJA PM rate, 999 gold (₹ per 10 g, before GST)
14 Nov 2025₹1,24,794
29 Jan 2026₹1,75,340
26 Feb 2026₹1,58,022
22 Apr 2026₹1,52,116
29 Jul 2026₹1,42,224
7 Oct 2026₹1,47,767

In simple terms (our own calculation from these rates): gold jumped about 40% in under three months, then dropped about 19% over the next six months, and then recovered about 4%. In one year the direction changed more than once. That is why timing gold is so hard.

1. The World Gold Price and the US Dollar

Gold is traded around the world in US dollars. When the dollar gets stronger, gold becomes more expensive for people holding other currencies, so fewer people buy it and the price tends to ease. When the dollar gets weaker, the opposite tends to happen.

The RBI’s August 2026 Bulletin put it this way: gold fell in July “alongside a stronger US dollar and elevated US treasury yields”, then rose in August after weaker-than-expected US jobs data.

2. Interest Rates and Bond Yields

A bond “yield” is the interest an investor earns on a bond. Gold pays no interest at all. So when bonds start paying more, gold looks less attractive and its price can come under pressure. The RBI’s September 2026 Bulletin said gold stayed “broadly range bound in September, as higher US Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar exerted downward pressure”.

Closer home, the RBI raised its repo rate (the rate at which it lends to banks) by 0.25 percentage points to 5.50% on 7 October 2026 and said rate cuts are off the table for now. The RBI did not talk about gold in that statement, so we cannot say what it means for gold. It is simply the kind of news investors weigh against gold.

3. Worry and Central Bank Buying

When the world feels uncertain, many investors move money into gold because it has been seen as a safe place to park wealth. This is called “safe-haven” buying. Central banks (the national banks that manage a country’s reserves) also hold gold, and some keep buying it.

The RBI’s September 2026 Bulletin noted a “safe haven rise” in August and said “continued central bank purchases for reserve diversification provided support”. These forces can push gold up even when the dollar and bond yields are pushing it down. That tug of war is one reason gold is so hard to time.

4. The Rupee

India buys most of its gold from abroad, paying in dollars. Imagine the world price is the same on two days. If the rupee is weaker on the second day, you need more rupees to buy the same gold, so the Indian price is higher. If the rupee is stronger, the Indian price is lower.

This is simple currency arithmetic, not an official forecast. Check today’s rupee level before drawing conclusions.

5. Import Duty: The 2026 Change Many Buyers Missed

Import duty is a tax charged when gold enters India. It is the one driver the government controls directly. The RBI Bulletin for May 2026 recorded that “on May 12, 2026, the Government announced a hike in customs duty on gold and silver from 6 per cent to 15 per cent”, effective 13 May 2026, after a surge in imports.

A quick calculation: paying 15% instead of 6% makes imported gold roughly 8.5% costlier before GST. That is our own arithmetic, not an actual price change, because the world price and the rupee were also moving.

The RBI’s September 2026 Bulletin said gold imports “moderated since May 2026 following the imposition of the import duty” and fell in August. We could not find the official customs notification on the CBIC website, so please confirm the exact duty on cbic.gov.in before relying on these numbers.

6. Festivals, Weddings and Local Demand

Many Indian families buy gold around festivals and weddings. When everyone wants gold at once, jewellers can charge more over the benchmark rate. We have not found an official data series that measures this, so we do not put numbers on it.

A simple habit helps: if the price looks jumpy around a festival, compare it with the IBJA rate for the day. If IBJA has not moved much, the extra is local.

7. Why Your Jeweller’s Price Is Higher Than the Headline Rate

The IBJA rate is only the starting point. Your final bill adds more:

  • GST at 3%. The GST Council’s jewellery FAQ says GST is payable “at the rate of 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not”.
  • Making charges and the jeweller’s margin. These vary from shop to shop.
  • Purity. 22-carat gold (916) costs less than 24-carat (999). On 7 October 2026, IBJA’s PM rates per 10 grams before GST were ₹1,47,767 for 999, ₹1,35,355 for 916 and ₹1,10,825 for 750 purity.

So, When Should You Buy Gold?

There is no official “best month” or “best day”. Last year proves it: a 40% rise, a 19% fall and a small recovery, all within 11 months.

What ordinary buyers can do:

  • Buy in small instalments instead of one big purchase.
  • Keep gold to a share of your savings that you are comfortable with.
  • Compare the day’s IBJA rate with the quote you get at the shop.

Our guide on how to invest in volatile Indian markets explains the instalment idea in more detail.

Tax when you sell physical gold: if you held it for more than 24 months, the profit is taxed at 12.5% without indexation, for sales on or after 23 July 2024, according to the tax department’s FAQ on the 2024 changes. We could not verify the rules for gold ETFs or gold mutual funds from an official source, so check the Income Tax Department website for those.

Sovereign Gold Bonds: the RBI’s SGB page lists no new issue after the 2023-24 scheme; all 2026 notices are about redemptions. The Budget 2026-27 speech proposed that the capital gains tax exemption on these bonds apply only if you bought at the original issue and hold till maturity.

What Nobody Can Tell You

Many websites offer a “gold rate prediction” for next week or next year. No regulator or official body publishes one. Even experts were caught off guard by the January 2026 peak and the fall that followed. Use official benchmarks for today’s price, and use your own goal and time frame to decide how much gold to hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why did gold prices fall in India in 2026?
IBJA’s rate fell from about ₹1.75 lakh per 10 grams on 29 January 2026 to about ₹1.42 lakh on 29 July. The RBI’s August 2026 Bulletin linked the July fall to a stronger US dollar and higher US bond yields. Other factors also moved during the year.
  2. When do gold prices go up in India?
Gold tends to rise when the world price rises, the rupee weakens, people feel nervous about the world, or import duty goes up. There is no official calendar of the best month, and prices moved both ways within a single year.
  3. Did the 2026 import duty hike make gold costlier?
The RBI Bulletin says customs duty on gold rose from 6% to 15% from 13 May 2026. Simple arithmetic puts the effect at roughly 8.5% before GST, but world prices and the rupee also moved, so the shop price did not rise by exactly that much.
  4. What is the IBJA gold rate?
IBJA publishes a daily gold rate in rupees per 10 grams for different purities, before GST. Jewellers then add GST, making charges and their own margin.
  5. How much GST is charged on gold?
The GST Council’s jewellery FAQ states 3% GST on the total value of jewellery, whether or not making charges are shown separately. Confirm the current rate on cbic-gst.gov.in before buying.
  6. Why does the gold price differ between cities and jewellers?
The benchmark leaves out GST, making charges and local margins, so the final bill differs from shop to shop and city to city. Purity also changes the rate, for example 916 versus 999 gold.
  7. Is tax charged on profit from selling gold?
For physical gold held more than 24 months, the profit is taxed at 12.5% without indexation, for sales on or after 23 July 2024, per CBDT’s FAQ. Rules for gold ETFs and funds differ and were not verified here.
  8. Can anyone predict the gold price?
No official body publishes a reliable forecast. Prices respond to the dollar, interest rates, world events, the rupee and government policy, which can all change quickly.
