Every conversation about gig workers in India eventually lands on the same topics. Income instability. Social security. Platform accountability. These are real and important. But they focus entirely on what gig workers lack, and almost never on what they are working toward.

A new study puts a number on the goals of gig workers in India for the first time. Not what policy says they need. Not what platforms promise them. What they say, when someone asks them directly.

In July 2025, an independent research firm surveyed 122 PickMyWork partners across four states. One of the questions was simple: what is your ultimate goal in life? The answers are more ambitious than most people expect.

The Goals of Gig Workers in India: What the Data Says

The single most common answer was entrepreneurship. 33% of partners said their ultimate goal is to build their own business. Not get a better job. Not move into a larger company. Build something of their own.

The next most common goal was financial independence, cited by 25%. After that, building or owning a home at 16%. Leading a happy, dignified life at 9%.

Put together, 58% of gig workers surveyed want either entrepreneurship or financial independence as their end destination. That is not a workforce looking for handouts or asking to be absorbed into formal employment. That is a workforce with a plan.

94% Feel the Work Is Actually Getting Them There

Having a goal is one thing. Feeling like your current work is moving you toward it is another.

94% of partners said they feel their work with PickMyWork is helping them achieve their ultimate goal in life. That is not a satisfaction score. It is a direction score. It says that for the overwhelming majority of people surveyed, this is not just a way to pay the bills today. It is a step toward something bigger.

For the 33% whose goal is to build a business, the connection is direct. Gig work teaches you how to sell, how to talk to strangers, how to manage your own schedule, and how to keep going when tasks are slow. These are exactly the skills a first-time founder needs, and most business schools do not teach them on the ground the way a year of gig work does.

In Their Own Words

“Coming from a family where no one had ever gone to college, continuing my education always felt uncertain. I started working with PickMyWork part-time while studying, and it changed things for me. Being able to contribute towards my own education has given me a strong sense of independence. In the future, I want to start my own business and create opportunities not just for myself, but for others as well.”

He is 20, studying, earning, and already thinking about the people he wants to bring along with him. That combination of personal ambition and social awareness is not unusual among the partners in this study. It is the norm.

It Is Not Just About Money. It Never Was.

The research also asked partners what has changed about themselves since joining PickMyWork. 83% reported meaningful changes and when you look at what those changes are, the picture goes well beyond income.

  • 69% cited improved financial stability and access.
  • 39% said they have more opportunity to socialise and connect with people.
  • 38% reported better health.
  • 34% said their standard of living improved.
  • 30% feel greater happiness and contentment.
  • 22% said they are now able to aspire — to think bigger about what their life could look like.

That last one is worth pausing on. 22% of partners said they can now aspire in a way they could not before. Income did not just pay their bills. It expanded what they believed was possible.

What This Means If Gig Work in India Is on Your Radar

If you are a student, a homemaker, or someone between jobs thinking about whether gig work is worth your time, the question is not just “how much will I earn?” The better question is: will this move me toward my goals?

The data suggests it does. Not because gig work is a destination, but because for most people it functions as a foundation. A way to build income, confidence, and skills at the same time, without waiting for someone else to give you a start.

India’s gig workforce grew 55% between FY21 and FY25, from 7.7 million to 12 million workers, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26. The people joining are not doing it because they have no other options. They are doing it because it works, on their terms, around their lives, toward their own goals.
